What we are and how to join
The Midwest Writers Association (MWA) is a Chicago-area organization of independent, professional nonfiction writers who meet regularly for the purpose of sharing information and discussing the practical details of self-employment. Meetings include dinner programs featuring speakers who are editors, publishers, agents, or other writers, and informal gatherings in members’ homes, where we discuss issues or hear speakers on topics related to the writing life. We also have a holiday event.
The basic requirement for admission to MWA is one recently published full-length nonfiction book or three freelance magazine-length feature articles published (for pay) during the preceding year, submitted to the membership committee. Ideally, articles should cover at least two different topics, preferably with two appearing in the same publication. Consideration is also given to other freelance non-fiction writing (articles in trade magazines, newspaper feature articles, brochures, documentary video or film scripts, monographs, textbooks, corporate newsletters, contracts with book advances, etc.), in both print and electronic media. However, because this is a professional organization, though we are widening the types of non-fiction writing we accept, it is still a requirement that the work be for pay, and that you make all or a portion of your income from your writing.
Members of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) are automatically eligible for membership in MWA upon application to the membership committee and payment of annual MWA dues.
Membership dues are $30 per year.
For many years, MWA met concurrently with the Midwest Chapter of ASJA (now inactive) and still encourages working toward membership in the prestigious national organization, which includes more than a thousand leading freelance writers across the country and publishes a helpful monthly newsletter.
